Surgical Transition

What is surgical transition?

For some individuals who are transitioning or have transitioned, they may choose to undergo gender-affirmation surgery. These surgical procedures are performed by specialised urologists and plastic surgeons to align a person's physical appearance with their gender identity.

How we can help?

Physiotherapy and Surgical Transition?

Our trained physiotherapists can assist with the following:

Before surgery:

Your surgeon may ask you to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist for an assessment before booking a surgery date to make sure you have enough control to aid recovery and address any concerns that may already exist, these typically include:

  • Reviewing your bladder and bowel habits,
  • A Pelvic floor exam to assess your baseline level of control and awareness. This can either be internal or done by ultrasound, depending on your level of comfort
  • Exercises and strategies to address any concerns and dysfunction

After surgery:

Once you have had surgery, physiotherapy can help with your recovery and work towards restoring normal function, this includes:

  • Education and progression of dilator therapy
  • Sensory mapping of the surgical site
  • Bladder and bowel management strategies
  • Pelvic floor normalisation
  • Ultrasound and Laser for scar and adhesion management
  • Advice on the use of vibrators when returning to intimacy
