What is Pelvic Girdle Pain?

Pelvic girdle pain is a general term for pain experienced in your sacroiliac joint,  pubic symphysis, hip or coccyx (tailbone). You may also experience a mix of these.

Signs and symptoms?

  • Are you pregnant and experiencing pain that is aggravated when walking, doing household chores or any single leg activity like climbing stairs?
  • Do you experience any pain in the front of the pelvic bone over the pubic symphysis or pain to touch this area?
  • Do you experience pain in the area of the sacroiliac joint, or coccyx or pain to touch these joints?
  • Have you experienced a fall, accident or trauma to your pelvic area?
  • Does your tailbone hurt when sitting but not when walking?

Contributing factors?

  • Women with hypermobile joints tend to be more at risk of developing Pelvic Girdle Pain
  • Pregnancy causes increased load to all joints and can contribute to pain in any area around the pelvis
  • A previous history of hip / pubic symphysis, coccyx or SIJ pain
  • A history or a fall on the coccyx
  • A history of any trauma to the pubic symphysis, SIJ or coccyx.
